AMP EV calls on van, HGV and coach operators to prepare now for the Depot Charging Scheme’s second window, opening 28 October.

Fleet operators across the UK can claim 70% of the cost of installing depot charging, up to £1 million per organisation, when the government’s Depot Charging Scheme reopens on 28 October. AMP EV is urging operators to start preparing now, as the window closes on 29 January 2027.

The scheme, managed by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), supports operators of battery-electric vans, HGVs and coaches that return to base. It covers charge point hardware, installation, energisation, electrical components and civil works. Grid connection costs are generally not included.

The second window is for projects starting from April 2027 and completed by 31 March 2028. Applicants must already have evidence of grid capacity and at least one eligible electric vehicle owned, leased or on order.

For most fleets, the grid is the hardest part of going electric, and it’s the first thing this scheme asks for. Operators who start the conversation with their network operator now will be ready when the window opens. Those who wait until January risk missing out on up to £1 million of support.

How to apply

AMP EV is advising fleet operators to work through these five steps:

  1. Confirm grid capacity. Secure a grid connection agreement, a capacity letter from the Distribution Network Operator (DNO), or an accepted written offer.
  1. Confirm fleet eligibility. Own, lease or have ordered at least one battery-electric van, HGV or coach.
  1. Scope the project. Work with an installer to produce a technical cost breakdown for hardware and site engineering.
  1. Apply online through the GOV.UK Find a Grant service while the window is open.
  1. Sign before spending. Only costs incurred after the Grant Funding Agreement is signed are eligible, so no work should start before then.
