This week our business development and account manager has been taking some R+R in the alps. One thing which stood out was the availability of EV charge points in sub 0 degree climates.

This got us thinking about the myth that EV chargers struggle to operate in these climates:

EV chargers are designed to function in cold temperatures, but extreme cold can affect their efficiency. Most modern chargers have built-in heating elements or thermal management systems to keep components at optimal operating temperatures. Some chargers also use insulated cables to prevent stiffness and brittleness. Additionally, many EVs and chargers support preconditioning, which warms the battery before charging to improve efficiency and reduce energy loss. However, charging times may still be slightly longer in very cold weather due to the slower chemical reactions in lithium-ion batteries.
